A vulnerability has been found in GNU binutils 2.30 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function elf_parse_notes of the file elf.c. The elf_parse_notes function in elf.c in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.30, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and segmentation violation) via a note with a large alignment.
The bug was discovered 02/05/2018. The weakness was published 02/09/2018 as Bug 22788 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-6872 since 02/09/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
