Details
A vulnerability was found in Exiv2 0.26 (Image Processing Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function Exiv2::getULong of the file types.cpp. The manipulation as part of a Image File leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In Exiv2 0.26, there is an integer overflow leading to a heap-based buffer over-read in the Exiv2::getULong function in types.cpp. Remote attackers can exploit the vulnerability to cause a denial of service via a crafted image file. Note that this vulnerability is different from CVE-2017-14864, which is an invalid memory address dereference.
The bug was discovered 12/10/2017. The weakness was released 02/12/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-17725 since 12/17/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 64 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109928 (Fedora 27 : exiv2 (2018-fc9c5969b4)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277684 (Fedora Security Update for exiv2 (FEDORA-2018-fc9c5969b4)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
