PHP up to 5.5.6 OBJECT parse_iso_intervals.c DateInterval memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 5.5.6 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function DateInterval of the file ext/date/lib/parse_iso_intervals.c of the component OBJECT Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The scan function in ext/date/lib/parse_iso_intervals.c in PHP through 5.5.6 does not properly restrict creation of DateInterval objects, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read) via a crafted interval specification.

The weakness was shared 11/27/2013 as Fixed bug #66060 (Heap buffer over-read in DateInterval) as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at git.php.net. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6712 since 11/08/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71928 (PHP 5.5.x < 5.5.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350336 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for php: ALAS-2014-393).

Applying the patch Fixed bug #66060 (Heap buffer over-read in DateInterval) is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.php.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13821.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89417), Tenable (71928), SecurityFocus (BID 64018†), OSVDB (100440†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1029409†). The entries VDB-11512, VDB-13409 and VDB-67624 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
