A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.9.4 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function cdf_read_property_info of the file cdf.c of the component apache_mod_php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The cdf_read_property_info function in cdf.c in the Fileinfo component in PHP before 5.4.29 and 5.5.x before 5.5.13 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop or out-of-bounds memory access) via a vector that (1) has zero length or (2) is too long.

The weakness was shared 09/17/2014 by Remi Collet as HT6443 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0238 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78304 (Amazon Linux AMI : php54 (ALAS-2014-361)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350336 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for php: ALAS-2014-393).

Upgrading to version 10.9.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16444.
