Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils 2.30 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function coff_pointerize_aux of the file coffgen.c of the component libbfd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the coff_pointerize_aux function in coffgen.c in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.30, an index is not validated, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted file, as demonstrated by objcopy of a COFF object.
The bug was discovered 01/24/2018. The weakness was released 02/18/2018 as Bug 22741 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-7208 since 02/17/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 24 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110730 (EulerOS 2.0 SP3 : binutils (EulerOS-SA-2018-1154)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Huawei Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237010 (Red Hat Update for binutils (RHSA-2018:3032)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
