Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenStack Nova up to 15.1.0/16.0.4 (Cloud Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Volume Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in OpenStack Nova 15.x through 15.1.0 and 16.x through 16.0.4. By detaching and reattaching an encrypted volume, an attacker may access the underlying raw volume and corrupt the LUKS header, resulting in a denial of service attack on the compute host. (The same code error also results in data loss, but that is not a vulnerability because the user loses their own data.) All Nova setups supporting encrypted volumes are affected.
The bug was discovered 12/21/2017. The weakness was shared 02/19/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at launchpad.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-18191 since 02/19/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 60 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210310 (RHEL 7 : openstack-nova (RHSA-2018:2332)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236987 (Red Hat Update for openstack-nova (RHSA-2018:2855)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
