Summary
A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in libxml2. Impacted is an unknown function. The manipulation results in xml external entity reference. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-7375. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in libxml2 (Document Processing Software) (unknown version). Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a xml external entity reference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-611. The product processes an XML document that can contain XML entities with URIs that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A flaw in libxml2 allows remote XML entity inclusion with default parser flags (i.e., when the caller did not request entity substitution, DTD validation, external DTD subset loading, or default DTD attributes). Depending on the context, this may expose a higher-risk attack surface in libxml2 not usually reachable with default parser flags, and expose content from local files, HTTP, or FTP servers (which might be otherwise unreachable).
The bug was discovered 04/17/2017. The weakness was published 02/19/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at android.googlesource.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-7375 since 03/31/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 207 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104492 (GLSA-201711-01 : libxml2: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43650 (Juniper Junos Multiple vulnerabilities in libxml2 (JSA10916)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104492), EUVD (EUVD-2017-16402) and SecurityFocus (BID 98877†). Similar entries are available at VDB-81409, VDB-87415, VDB-87821 and VDB-87822. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
