The qpidd broker in Apache Qpid 0.30 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via an AMQP message with (1) an invalid range in a sequence set, (2) content-bearing methods other than message-transfer, or (3) a session-gap control before a corresponding session-attach.
The bug was discovered 01/13/2015. The weakness was disclosed 02/21/2018 by G. Geshev with MWR Labs (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at issues.apache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-0203 since 11/18/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 143 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84306 (Fedora 21 : qpid-cpp-0.32-4.fc21 (2015-9503)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124979 (Fedora Security Update for qpid-cpp (FEDORA-2016-120b194a75)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
