A vulnerability was found in wpa_supplicant up to 2.5. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function eap_pwd_perform_confirm_exchange of the file eap_peer/eap_pwd.c of the component Network Configuration. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. The eap_pwd_perform_confirm_exchange function in eap_peer/eap_pwd.c in wpa_supplicant 2.x before 2.6, when EAP-pwd is enabled in a network configuration profile, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via an EAP-pwd Confirm message followed by the Identity exchange.
The bug was discovered 07/01/2015. The weakness was published 02/21/2018 (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-5316 since 07/01/2015.
