hostapd/wpa_supplicant EAP-pwd Peer L/M denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in hostapd and wpa_supplicant (unknown version) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component EAP-pwd Peer. The manipulation of the argument L/M with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The EAP-pwd peer implementation in hostapd and wpa_supplicant 1.0 through 2.4 does not clear the L (Length) and M (More) flags before determining if a response should be fragmented, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted message.

The weakness was disclosed 06/15/2015 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-4146 since 05/31/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83964 (FreeBSD : hostapd and wpa_supplicant -- multiple vulnerabilities (bbc0db92-084c-11e5-bb90-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175554 (Debian Security Update for wpa (DSA 3397-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (83964), SecurityFocus (BID 74549†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57444†). The entries VDB-75887, VDB-75888, VDB-75889 and VDB-75890 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
