Elasticsearch Logstash up to 1.4.2 File Output Plugin PATH path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Elasticsearch Logstash up to 1.4.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component File Output Plugin. The manipulation of the argument PATH with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the file output plugin in Elasticsearch Logstash before 1.4.3 allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary files via vectors related to dynamic field references in the path option.

The weakness was presented 06/15/2015 by Colin (Website). The advisory is shared at elastic.co. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-4152 since 06/01/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84381 (FreeBSD : logstash -- Directory traversal vulnerability in the file output plugin (24bde04f-1a10-11e5-b43d-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370206 (Elasticsearch Logstash File Output Plugin Directory Traversal Vulnerability (ESA-2015-04)).

Upgrading to version 1.4.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (84381), SecurityFocus (BID 75112†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-50767†).
