Details
A vulnerability was found in Elasticsearch Logstash up to 1.4.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component File Output Plugin. The manipulation of the argument PATH with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the file output plugin in Elasticsearch Logstash before 1.4.3 allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary files via vectors related to dynamic field references in the path option.
The weakness was presented 06/15/2015 by Colin (Website). The advisory is shared at elastic.co. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-4152 since 06/01/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
