Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file epan/crypt/airpdcap.c of the component IEEE 802.11 Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In Wireshark 2.4.0 to 2.4.4 and 2.2.0 to 2.2.12, the IEEE 802.11 dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/crypt/airpdcap.c by rejecting lengths that are too small.
The bug was discovered 02/22/2018. The weakness was presented 02/23/2018 as Bug 14442 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-7335 since 02/22/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1055.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107093 (Wireshark 2.2.x < 2.2.13 / 2.4.x < 2.4.5 Multiple DoS Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371113 (F5 BIG-IP ASM and LTM Multiple Wireshark Vulnerabilities (K34035645)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (107093) and SecurityFocus (BID 103165†). See VDB-113753, VDB-113754, VDB-113755 and VDB-113756 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
