Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file plugins/docsis/packet-docsis.c of the component DOCSIS Protocol Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In Wireshark 2.4.0 to 2.4.4, the DOCSIS protocol dissector could crash. This was addressed in plugins/docsis/packet-docsis.c by removing the recursive algorithm that had been used for concatenated PDUs.
The bug was discovered 02/22/2018. The weakness was published 02/23/2018 as Bug 14446 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-7337 since 02/22/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1055 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107093 (Wireshark 2.2.x < 2.2.13 / 2.4.x < 2.4.5 Multiple DoS Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371113 (F5 BIG-IP ASM and LTM Multiple Wireshark Vulnerabilities (K34035645)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
