Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GNU libcdio up to 0.9. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file iso-info.c of the component ISO File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
print_iso9660_recurse in iso-info.c in GNU libcdio before 1.0.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted iso file.
The bug was discovered 10/23/2017. The weakness was presented 02/24/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ftp.gnu.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-18198 since 02/23/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 124 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107162 (Fedora 27 : libcdio (2018-30a8492364)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237023 (Red Hat Update for libcdio (RHSA-2018:3246)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
