A vulnerability was found in zsh up to 5.3. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file builtin.c of the component Compatibility Mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. In builtin.c in zsh before 5.4, when sh compatibility mode is used, there is a NULL pointer dereference during processing of the cd command with no argument if HOME is not set.
The bug was discovered 06/13/2017. The weakness was disclosed 02/27/2018 with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is available at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-18205 since 02/27/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 259 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109139 (Amazon Linux 2 : zsh (ALAS-2018-986)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157839 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for zsh (ELSA-2018-3073)).
Upgrading to version 5.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
