An issue was discovered in GraphicsMagick 1.3.26. An allocation failure vulnerability was found in the function ReadOnePNGImage in coders/png.c, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted file that triggers an attempt at a large png_pixels array allocation.
The bug was discovered 09/13/2017. The weakness was released 03/05/2018 by Venustech with Adlab of Venustech (Website). The advisory is shared for download at hg.graphicsmagick.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-18219 since 03/05/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 173 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
