Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in ntp up to 4.2.8p11 (Network Management Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component ntpd. The manipulation as part of a Timestamp leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
ntpd in ntp 4.2.8p4 before 4.2.8p11 drops bad packets before updating the "received" timestamp, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (disruption) by sending a packet with a zero-origin timestamp causing the association to reset and setting the contents of the packet as the most recent timestamp. This issue is a result of an incomplete fix for CVE-2015-7704.
The bug was discovered 02/28/2018. The weakness was shared 03/06/2018 as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-7184 since 02/16/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
