Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in ntp up to 4.2.8p11. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Protocol Engine. Such manipulation as part of Source IP Address leads to input validation. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2018-7185. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in ntp up to 4.2.8p11 (Network Management Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Protocol Engine. The manipulation as part of a Source IP Address leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The protocol engine in ntp 4.2.6 before 4.2.8p11 allows a remote attackers to cause a denial of service (disruption) by continually sending a packet with a zero-origin timestamp and source IP address of the "other side" of an interleaved association causing the victim ntpd to reset its association.
The bug was discovered 02/28/2018. The weakness was published 03/06/2018 by Miroslav Lichvar with Red Hat as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-7185 since 02/16/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107046 (FreeBSD : ntp -- multiple vulnerabilities (af485ef4-1c58-11e8-8477-d05099c0ae8c)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43630 (Juniper Junos Multiple vulnerabilities in NTP (JSA10898)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
