Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.14 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the file fs/ocfs2/aops.c. The manipulation of the argument e_cpos with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel before 4.15, fs/ocfs2/aops.c omits use of a semaphore and consequently has a race condition for access to the extent tree during read operations in DIRECT mode, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (BUG) by modifying a certain e_cpos field.
The bug was discovered 11/15/2017. The weakness was shared 03/12/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-18224 since 03/11/2018. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 116 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109518 (Debian DSA-4188-1 : linux - security update (Spectre)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171731 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:3934-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (109518), SecurityFocus (BID 103353†) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2022-0532). The entries VDB-111185, VDB-113696, VDB-113823 and VDB-114029 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
