A vulnerability has been found in LibTIFF up to 4.0.6 (Image Processing Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function vgetparent of the file tif_pixarlog.c of the component TIFF Image Data Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the PixarLogDecode function in tif_pixarlog.c in LibTIFF 4.0.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted TIFF image, as demonstrated by overwriting the vgetparent function pointer with rgb2ycbcr.
The bug was discovered 06/15/2016. The weakness was presented 03/12/2018 by Kaixiang Zhang with Qihoo 360 (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-5314 since 06/06/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92597 (openSUSE Security Update : tiff (openSUSE-2016-911)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175938 (Debian Security Update for tiff (DSA 3762-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
