A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in LibTIFF up to 4.0.6 (Image Processing Software). This affects the function setByteArray of the file tif_dir.c of the component TIFF Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The setByteArray function in tif_dir.c in libtiff 4.0.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted tiff image.
The bug was discovered 06/15/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/07/2017 by Kaixiang Zhang with Qihoo 360 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-5315 since 06/06/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 208 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96373 (GLSA-201701-16 : libTIFF: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175938 (Debian Security Update for tiff (DSA 3762-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
