A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in LibTIFF up to 4.0.6 (Image Processing Software). This vulnerability affects the function PixarLogCleanup of the file tif_pixarlog.c of the component rgb2ycbcr. The manipulation as part of a TIFF Image leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. Out-of-bounds read in the PixarLogCleanup function in tif_pixarlog.c in libtiff 4.0.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash the application by sending a crafted TIFF image to the rgb2ycbcr tool.
The bug was discovered 06/15/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/20/2017 by Kaixiang Zhang with Qihoo 360 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-5316 since 06/06/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 86 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
