A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in LibTIFF up to 4.0.6 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function setByteArray of the file tif_dir.c of the component TIFF Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The setByteArray function in tif_dir.c in libtiff 4.0.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted tiff image.
The bug was discovered 06/15/2016. The weakness was released 04/11/2017 by Kaixiang Zhang with Qihoo 360 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-5322 since 06/06/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 76 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93236 (Debian DLA-606-1 : tiff security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175938 (Debian Security Update for tiff (DSA 3762-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
