A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in LibTIFF up to 4.0.6 (Image Processing Software). This issue affects the function PixarLogDecode of the file libtiff.so. The manipulation as part of a TIFF File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the PixarLogDecode function in libtiff.so in the PixarLogDecode function in libtiff 4.0.6 and earlier, as used in GNOME nautilus, allows attackers to cause a denial of service attack (crash) via a crafted TIFF file.
The bug was discovered 06/15/2016. The weakness was presented 01/20/2017 by Kaixiang Zhang with Qihoo 360 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.opensuse.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-5317 since 06/06/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 86 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93439 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : tiff (SUSE-SU-2016:2271-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175938 (Debian Security Update for tiff (DSA 3762-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
