A vulnerability was found in Palo Alto PAN-OS 5.0.8 (Firewall Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Radius. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. The weakness was disclosed 11/21/2013 as DOC-6244 Issue 55287 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared at live.paloaltonetworks.com. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
When a RADIUS user's administrator permission scope was set to Device group and template, the permission was not being enforced correctly and shared objects could be modified using the web interface.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading to version 5.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
