Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 through 11 allows local users to bypass the Protected Mode protection mechanism, and consequently gain privileges, by leveraging the ability to execute sandboxed code, aka "Internet Explorer Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was released 12/10/2013 by James Forshaw with Context Information Security as MS13-097 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-5046 since 08/06/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/02/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3058 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
