A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 (Web Browser). This affects some unknown functionality. Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 and 11 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 04/12/2011. The weakness was presented 12/10/2013 by Atte Kettunen with OUSPG as MS13-097 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-5051 since 08/06/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/02/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 973 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71312 (MS13-097: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2898785)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100172 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-097)).
Applying the patch MS13-097 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13389.
