A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in libgit2 up to 0.26.1. Affected is the function read_entry of the file index.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
Incorrect returning of an error code in the index.c:read_entry() function leads to a double free in libgit2 before v0.26.2, which allows an attacker to cause a denial of service via a crafted repository index file.
The bug was discovered 03/08/2018. The weakness was disclosed 03/14/2018 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-8099 since 03/13/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Upgrading to version 0.26.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 9 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
