A vulnerability was found in SecurEnvoy SecurMail up to 9.2. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Multiple cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerabilities in SecurEnvoy SecurMail before 9.2.501 allow remote attackers to hijack the authentication of arbitrary users for requests that (1) delete e-mail messages via a delete action in a request to secmail/getmessage.exe or (2) spoof arbitrary users and reply to their messages via a request to secserver/securectrl.exe.
The bug was discovered 03/12/2018. The weakness was presented 03/15/2018 as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-7701 since 03/05/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370828 (SecurEnvoy SecurMail multiple critical vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 9.2.501 eliminates this vulnerability.
