A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in SecurEnvoy SecurMail up to 9.2. This affects an unknown code of the file secmail/getmessage.exe. The manipulation of the argument mailboxid as part of a Parameter leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in SecurEnvoy SecurMail before 9.2.501 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the mailboxid parameter to secmail/getmessage.exe.
The bug was discovered 03/12/2018. The weakness was published 03/15/2018 as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-7703 since 03/05/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370828 (SecurEnvoy SecurMail multiple critical vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 9.2.501 eliminates this vulnerability.
