Details
A vulnerability has been found in Easy Software Products CUPS up to 1.1.14 (Printing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function Decrypt::makeFileKey2 of the component xpdf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the Decrypt::makeFileKey2 function in Decrypt.cc for xpdf 3.00 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PDF file with a large /Encrypt /Length keyLength value.
The bug was discovered 01/06/2005. The weakness was disclosed 01/19/2005 by Martin Schulze with Debian (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Easy Software Products. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-0064 since 01/13/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20683 (Ubuntu 4.10 : xpdf, cupsys vulnerabilities (USN-64-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cups.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
