Open Web Analytics up to 1.5.5 CSRF Protection owa_user_id cross-site request forgery

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Open Web Analytics up to 1.5.5. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component CSRF Protection. The manipulation of the argument owa_user_id as part of a User Name leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Open Web Analytics (OWA) before 1.5.6 improperly generates random nonce values, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass a CSRF protection mechanism by leveraging knowledge of an OWA user name.

The bug was discovered 02/13/2014. The weakness was presented 03/20/2018 by Dana James Traversie with Dell SecureWorks (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openwebanalytics.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-1457 since 01/14/2014. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74189 (Open Web Analytics < 1.5.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 1.5.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (74189), SecurityFocus (BID 65573†) and OSVDB (103318†). See VDB-66479 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
