Linux Kernel 3.12.1 ipc/shm.c race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-7026. There is not any exploit available. To fix this issue, it is recommended to deploy a patch.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.12.1 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file ipc/shm.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple race conditions in ipc/shm.c in the Linux kernel before 3.12.2 allow local users to cause a denial of service (use-after-free and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted application that uses shmctl IPC_RMID operations in conjunction with other shm system calls.

The weakness was released 11/21/2013 as ipc, shm: fix shm_file deletion races as confirmed posting (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The public release was coordinated with Linux. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-7026 since 12/09/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71796 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : linux-lts-saucy vulnerabilities (USN-2070-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195833 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-saucy Vulnerabilities (USN-2070-1)).

Applying the patch ipc/shm: fix shm_file deletion races is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71796), SecurityFocus (BID 64312†), OSVDB (100836†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42827†). Additional details are provided at kernel.org. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-10574, VDB-11315, VDB-11317 and VDB-11365.
