In Apache httpd 2.4.0 to 2.4.29, the expression specified in <FilesMatch> could match '$' to a newline character in a malicious filename, rather than matching only the end of the filename. This could be exploited in environments where uploads of some files are are externally blocked, but only by matching the trailing portion of the filename.
The bug was discovered 03/21/2018. The weakness was shared 03/26/2018 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-15715 since 10/21/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
