A vulnerability was found in Irfan Skiljan IrfanView 4.36 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component LZW Compression Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Heap-based buffer overflow in IrfanView before 4.37 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the LZW code stream in a GIF file.

The bug was discovered 11/26/2013. The weakness was presented 12/16/2013 by Dimitry Janushkevich as 2013-13 as not defined advisory (Secunia). The advisory is available at secunia.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-5351 since 08/21/2013. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error when handling the LZW code stream within GIF files and can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow via a specially crafted GIF file.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72395 (IrfanView < 4.37 Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121675 (IrfanView Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 4.37 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
