Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Docker Notary (Virtualization Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file gotuf/signed/verify.go of the component Signature Handler. The manipulation of the argument specifying with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In Docker Notary before 0.1, gotuf/signed/verify.go has a Signature Algorithm Not Matched to Key vulnerability. Because an attacker controls the field specifying the signature algorithm, they might (for example) be able to forge a signature by forcing a misinterpretation of an RSA-PSS key as Ed25519 elliptic-curve data.
The bug was discovered 07/31/2015. The weakness was shared 03/31/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at docs.docker.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-9258 since 03/31/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 974 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
