A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Parsedown up to 1.6.x. Affected is the function setMarkupEscaped of the component HTML Escaping. The manipulation as part of a Markdown leads to a html injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Parsedown version prior to 1.7.0 contains a Cross Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in `setMarkupEscaped` for escaping HTML that can result in JavaScript code execution. This attack appears to be exploitable via specially crafted markdown that allows it to side step HTML escaping by breaking AST boundaries. This vulnerability appears to have been fixed in 1.7.0 and later.
The bug was discovered 04/18/2018. The weakness was disclosed 04/18/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-1000162 since 04/18/2018.
