net-snmp up to 5.7.1 AgentX Subagent resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Net-SNMP 5.7.1 and earlier, when AgentX is registering to handle a MIB and processing GETNEXT requests, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash or infinite loop, CPU consumption, and hang) by causing the AgentX subagent to timeout.

The weakness was released 09/05/2012 by Ken Farnen as SNMPD DoS #2411 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-6151 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73163 (CentOS 5 : net-snmp (CESA-2014:0322)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122747 (Solaris 11.2 Support Repository Update (SRU) 3.4.1 Missing).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89485), Exploit-DB (38854), Tenable (73163), SecurityFocus (BID 64048†) and OSVDB (101547†).
