A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function process_ipmovie_chunk of the file libavformat/ipmovie.c. The manipulation of the argument OPCODE_SET_PALETTE with an unknown input leads to a unknown weakness. The impact remains unknown.
The issue has been introduced in 10/29/2013. The weakness was disclosed 12/18/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as avformat/ipmovie: Check that OPCODE_SET_PALETTE size is large enough as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 50 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
