A vulnerability was found in FreeRDP 2.0.0-beta1+android11. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function license_recv. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
An exploitable denial of service vulnerability exists within the handling of challenge packets in FreeRDP 2.0.0-beta1+android11. A specially crafted challenge packet can cause the program termination leading to a denial of service condition. An attacker can compromise the server or use man in the middle to trigger this vulnerability.
The bug was discovered 07/24/2017. The weakness was disclosed 04/24/2018 by Tyler Bohan with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-2839 since 12/01/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 40 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102945 (openSUSE Security Update : freerdp (openSUSE-2017-992)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176103 (Debian Security Update for freerdp (DSA 3923-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
