Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils 2.30 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function _bfd_XX_bfd_copy_private_bfd_data_common of the file peXXigen.c of the component libbfd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The _bfd_XX_bfd_copy_private_bfd_data_common function in peXXigen.c in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.30, processes a negative Data Directory size with an unbounded loop that increases the value of (external_IMAGE_DEBUG_DIRECTORY) *edd so that the address exceeds its own memory region, resulting in an out-of-bounds memory write, as demonstrated by objcopy copying private info with _bfd_pex64_bfd_copy_private_bfd_data_common in pex64igen.c.
The bug was discovered 04/24/2018. The weakness was released 04/29/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-10534 since 04/29/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111949 (Photon OS 1.0: Binutils / File / Linux / Pcre / Shadow PHSA-2018-1.0-0171 (deprecated)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family PhotonOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237010 (Red Hat Update for binutils (RHSA-2018:3032)).
A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (111949) and SecurityFocus (BID 104025†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-103381, VDB-113551, VDB-113950 and VDB-113951. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
