nghttp2 version >= 1.10.0 and nghttp2 <= v1.31.0 contains an Improper Input Validation CWE-20 vulnerability in ALTSVC frame handling that can result in segmentation fault leading to denial of service. This attack appears to be exploitable via network client. This vulnerability appears to have been fixed in >= 1.31.1.
The bug was discovered 04/13/2018. The weakness was published 05/08/2018 by Matt (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at nghttp2.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-1000168 since 04/09/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111095 (openSUSE Security Update : nodejs8 (openSUSE-2018-724)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237126 (Red Hat Update for Red Hat JBoss Core Services Apache HTTP Server 2.4.29 (RHSA-2019:0367)).
Upgrading to version 0.10.0 or 1.31.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
