Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Node.js 8.x/9.x/10.x (JavaScript Library). Affected is some unknown processing of the component node.js. The manipulation as part of a Object leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
All versions of Node.js 8.x, 9.x, and 10.x are vulnerable and the severity is HIGH. An attacker can cause a denial of service (DoS) by causing a node server providing an http2 server to crash. This can be accomplished by interacting with the http2 server in a manner that triggers a cleanup bug where objects are used in native code after they are no longer available. This has been addressed by updating the http2 implementation.
The bug was discovered 06/12/2018. The weakness was presented 06/13/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at nodejs.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-7161 since 02/15/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111095 (openSUSE Security Update : nodejs8 (openSUSE-2018-724)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277331 (Fedora Security Update for nodejs (FEDORA-2018-f59d961d7b)).
