A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function ff_MPV_frame_start of the file libavcodec/mpegvideo.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The issue has been introduced in 10/29/2013. The weakness was disclosed 01/03/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as mpegvideo: set reference/pict_type on generated reference frames as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 66 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
