The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-0959 since 12/01/2017. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
A remote code execution vulnerability exists when Windows Hyper-V on a host server fails to properly validate input from an authenticated user on a guest operating system. To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker could run a specially crafted application on a guest operating system that could cause the Hyper-V host operating system to execute arbitrary code.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109610 (KB4103726: Windows Server 2012 May 2018 Security Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91447 (Microsoft Windows Security Update May 2018).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
