A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Edge and ChakraCore (Web Browser) (the affected version is unknown). It has been declared as critical. The bug was discovered 05/08/2018. The weakness was disclosed 05/08/2018 with Qihoo 360 Vulcan Team as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-1022 since 12/01/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way the scripting engine handles objects in memory in Microsoft browsers. The vulnerability could corrupt memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109611 (KB4103731: Windows 10 Version 1703 May 2018 Security Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100335 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Security Update for May 2018).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
