Juniper Junos up to 13.3 XNM Command Processor XML memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Juniper Junos up to 13.3 (Router Operating System). Affected is an unknown part of the component XNM Command Processor. The manipulation as part of a XML leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The XNM command processor in Juniper Junos 10.4 before 10.4R16, 11.4 before 11.4R10, 12.1R before 12.1R8-S2, 12.1X44 before 12.1X44-D30, 12.1X45 before 12.1X45-D20, 12.1X46 before 12.1X46-D10, 12.2 before 12.2R7, 12.3 before 12.3R5, 13.1 before 13.1R3-S1, 13.2 before 13.2R2-S2, and 13.3 before 13.3R1, when xnm-ssl or xnm-clear-text is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was shared 01/08/2014 as JSA10607 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kb.juniper.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0613 since 12/31/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71996 (Juniper Junos XNM Command Remote DoS (JSA10607)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 10.4R16, 11.4R10, 12.1R8-S2, 12.1X44-D30, 12.1X45-D20, 12.1X46-D10, 12.2R7, 12.3R5, 13.1R3-S1, 13.2R2-S2 or 13.3R1 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable xnm-ssl/xnm-clear-text. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Use access lists or firewall filters to limit access to the router via the Junos XML protocol only from trusted hosts.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90504), Tenable (71996), SecurityFocus (BID 64998†), OSVDB (101861†) and Secunia (SA56375†). The entries VDB-11785, VDB-11786, VDB-11787 and VDB-12211 are related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
