A vulnerability was found in Juniper Junos 10.4/11.4/12.1r/12.1x44/12.1x45 on SRX (Router Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Juniper Junos before 10.4 before 10.4R16, 11.4 before 11.4R8, 12.1R before 12.1R7, 12.1X44 before 12.1X44-D20, and 12.1X45 before 12.1X45-D10 on SRX Series service gateways, when used as a UAC enforcer and captive portal is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (flowd crash) via a crafted HTTP message.
The weakness was disclosed 01/08/2014 as JSA10611 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.juniper.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0618 since 12/31/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72000 (Juniper Junos SRX Series flowd Remote DoS (JSA10611)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 10.4R16, 11.4R8, 12.1R7, 12.1X44-D20 or 12.1X45-D10 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable UAC Enforcer. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
