Details
A vulnerability was found in Node.js 4.x (JavaScript Library). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Path Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The `'path'` module in the Node.js 4.x release line contains a potential regular expression denial of service (ReDoS) vector. The code in question was replaced in Node.js 6.x and later so this vulnerability only impacts all versions of Node.js 4.x. The regular expression, `splitPathRe`, used within the `'path'` module for the various path parsing functions, including `path.dirname()`, `path.extname()` and `path.parse()` was structured in such a way as to allow an attacker to craft a string, that when passed through one of these functions, could take a significant amount of time to evaluate, potentially leading to a full denial of service.
The bug was discovered 03/21/2018. The weakness was published 05/17/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at nodejs.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-7158 since 02/15/2018. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108738 (FreeBSD : node.js -- multiple vulnerabilities (5a9bbb6e-32d3-11e8-a769-6daaba161086)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171090 (OpenSUSE Security Update for nodejs4 (openSUSE-SU-2018:0967-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
