Node.js 6.x DNS DNS Rebinding 7pk security

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Node.js 6.x (JavaScript Library). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component DNS Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a 7pk security vulnerability (DNS Rebinding). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-254. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Node.js inspector, in 6.x and later is vulnerable to a DNS rebinding attack which could be exploited to perform remote code execution. An attack is possible from malicious websites open in a web browser on the same computer, or another computer with network access to the computer running the Node.js process. A malicious website could use a DNS rebinding attack to trick the web browser to bypass same-origin-policy checks and to allow HTTP connections to localhost or to hosts on the local network. If a Node.js process with the debug port active is running on localhost or on a host on the local network, the malicious website could connect to it as a debugger, and get full code execution access.

The bug was discovered 03/21/2018. The weakness was disclosed 05/17/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at nodejs.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-7160 since 02/15/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1211.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108738 (FreeBSD : node.js -- multiple vulnerabilities (5a9bbb6e-32d3-11e8-a769-6daaba161086)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277286 (Fedora Security Update for nodejs (FEDORA-2018-e672eaf4df)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (108738). The entries VDB-117890 and VDB-117891 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
